Weet Bix 'Tryathalon'

A few days before the tryathalon I received a parcel. In that parcel there was a shirt, my numbers, a tattoo, a bag, some vouchers and a block of energy chocolate.

At night I couldn't sleep because I was so excited. Then in the morning my Dad wrote my number in permanent marker on my right arm and my right leg. After that we put my stickers on my bike, helmet and shirt. Then I had some rice bubble cake. Once I had some me and my Dad left.

Then I met up with Molly who is racing with me. I am biking and she is swimming and we are running together. At ten minutes past ten Molly started swimming I had to wait in a tent for her. When she came I gave Molly her bag and I ran to my bike and did a four kilometre bike then I grabbed Molly and started to run. I was puffed. Then in the middle of the run Molly fell and I fell on her. I hurt my knee a bit but Molly’s arm was bleeding. The plasters weren't big enough so we had to go to the ambulance.

Then we went on a rugby bouncy castle race. We snuck through the front without knowing there was a line and no one noticed. Then there was prize giving. Molly and I didn't win anything so we went home with my medal.

Visitors from Antarctica

 Carry and Dave

On Tuesday the fourth of March 2014 Carry and Dave from America came to Learning
Community Seventeen to talk about their awesome job working in Antarctica. We were very intrigued about the amazing animals they get to see while they are working on the ice.

Carry works in an office with lots of phones, speakers and computers she says she loves her job because she gets to answer all the phone calls from the other stations, about what they have been doing. Dave gets to go on the snow-mobile every day to check that the lights on the run way are still working. Dave also said that he loves to drive other vehicles around on the
ice.

Dave and Carry have been going down to Antarctica to work for more than twenty years. They go back to America when the weather starts to change into winter in Antarctica. I really enjoyed it when we got to try on some of their gear that they get to wear while they are outside in the snow researching and exploring the animals.

The visitors from Antarctica.

Carrie and Dave work in Antarctica and they took time off their holiday to come and visit LC17. They go through Christchurch to get to Antarctica because New Zealand is just above Antarctica. They come all the way from Oregon, North America. The environment down there is special so seven nations signed a treaty so no one will destroy it or harm it, and all of those countries own a bit of Antarctica.
No one lives there properly because it can get down to -90C. They work at McMurdo station and they get lots of people there in summer, sometimes 800. They must be wary because there is an active volcano on Antarctica. They leave New Zealand in a special plane with skis to help them land on the ice. To get around they also have pistonbullies which are like tractors to use on ice.
The people that travel to Antarctica have lots of different jobs. Palaeontologists find fossils like leaves. Some people study gases and other things by drilling in ice. People study animals like penguins and seals they also find other animals like Orcas and chicks that all cuddle up when their parents are away. Other people do diving in the icy cold water and they get very cold. Its so cold they have to wear many layers. The water gets down to -1 Celsius.
I think Antarctica would be an awesome place to work.
